WordPress Stopped Redirecting Shortened Child URLs

Question

I’m currently on WordPress 5.3 and just noticed that at some point, shortened URLs stopped working. And what I mean by “shortened” is that you used to be able to just type in the final part of the URL, regardless of it’s parent, and WordPress would automatically redirect you to the correct page.

For example

example.com/sweetness

would automatically redirect to

example.com/parent-category/child-category/grandchild-category/sweetness

It seems at some point WordPress became more specific and the exact URL is always needed. I’m guessing this functionality was removed during a recent WordPress update.

Is there anyway to restore this functionality back to WordPress so it will automatically redirects urls without the parent slug?

And just so you don’t think I’m making this up, it’s was confirmed that WordPress automatically redirects urls without parent slug.
