Permalink (custom structure) showing 404 as page in URL exists

I honestly can’t remember how I fixed this before, so I’m hoping someone can help.

We have a page in the site called /blog/ and this shows the list of posts in the site (Settings > Reading > static page (Posts page) ). Not a problem.

The posts work when the permalink is set to “/%postname%/” and not an issue.

If we change to “/blog/%postname%/” then it generates a 404 error as “/blog/” already exists as a page.

If I change the permalink to “/conor/%postname%/” (a URL that doesn’t exist), then the post shows just fine.

Can anyone recall if this is an .htaccess setting that I need to ignore the /blog/ directory, or something I need to add to functions.php to allow the permalinks to work, while a page in the URL structure already exists?
